Wood Selection and Wood Characteristics

We strive to construct products from solid hardwood whenever possible. Natural expansion and contraction of wood necessitates the use of some veneer products and/or luan plywood on certain pieces, such as the backs of large cabinets.

Natural wood has characteristics that are often non-uniform. We take great care in selecting boards that are free of defects, and in matching boards of similar color, texture and grain but like any craftsman working with natural wood, we cannot guarantee that all boards, tabletops and panels will be perfectly uniform.

Each piece of wood is unique with natural color and grain variations. It is not uncommon to find several contrasts in the same piece of furniture. The lighter pieces were closer to the tree's bark; the darker pieces were closer to the tree's center. Pitch pockets and mineral deposits are not flaws in the wood. These natural markings have absolutely no effect on the furniture's durability or structural integrity. Knots and other characteristics are much like the nubs you find in such fine fabrics as silk and linen; they are true indications of genuine quality. We cannot guarantee boards clear of these natural occurences.

Prices and Timeframes

We do not provide prices online yet, although we are working on upgrading our website to provide that information in the near future. Each of our pieces is handcrafted per order. Typically customers should plan on about 8-10 weeks for order completion, however we do have a large selection of FAST SHIP items that can be completed and shipped to you within about 3-4 weeks. Any item can be RUSH ordered and shipped within 10 working days of order processing for a 15% upcharge. Our socially and environmentally responsible practices ensure the use of only sustainably harvested hardwoods grown in well managed forests in Vermont and other New England states. All pieces are constructed of native cherry, maple, walnut and/or oak and are finished with a clear, non-toxic, low sheen, nitrocellulose lacquer matte finish. FSC is certified wood available upon request.

Every piece of our furniture can be customized to fit perfectly into your home decor. Want to combine a cherry table top with an espresso stained base? We'll help you make a beautiful statement about your sense of style. Often this kind of customization can be done at no additional charge. Is a particular entertainment center just a hair too big for your space? We will be happy to alter the dimensions for a nominal charge. Add a drawer to your dining or occasional table? No problem. Our furniture pieces are not products of an assembly line, results of a process where there's little responsibility or interest in the final product. At Vermont Woods Studios, quality and environmental sustainability count. Unlike butcher block construction, we hand pick solid woods for their products. Only lumber free of unnatural blemishes and stains meets our high quality standards. We handcraft our products from solid Cherry, Maple, Oak and Walnut and matche wood grains and individually create patterns unique to each table.

To protect each item's unique beauty and luster, we use a durable, water resistant finish. This sealer combines the strengths of lacquer with the best of polyurethane. Spills and abuses of normal living are no longer a problem. Yet, the natural beauty and supple feel of the wood grain is not lost. Instead, under the protection of this tough finish, your furniture item becomes more beautiful with time. Like the beauty of an antique, each piece darkens slightly with age, becoming more rich and appealing with the passage of time
