KAURI AND MACROCARPA DINING AND CONFERENCE TABLES FOR THE HOME, OFFICE OR RESORT

Believe it or not, the massive dining room table picured above is made from a single slice of wood! Kauri (Agathis Australis) is one of the world’s most spectacular trees. It grows to giant sizes in New Zealand and lives for thousands of years. Sadly, the Kauri tree was nearly wiped out for its valuable timber in the nineteenth century. Thankfully it is totally protected today and on it's way back.

What is interesting is that thousands of years ago some cataclysmic force of nature mowed down entire Kauri forests and then immediately buried them in mud. Now these trees are being carefully excavated from the swamp and the timber is as sound as the day it was buried. Carbon dating has aged these Kauri logs from 3000-40,000 years! Our friend and colleague Kerry Scott is one of the lucky master craftsman with the vision, expertise and equipment to transform these pieces of ancient history into high end, ultra luxury heirlooms for the home, office or resort.

At Vermont Woods Studios, our focus is on Vermont made eco friendly handcrafted luxury furniture. Occasionally, however an artisan from outside our borders approaches us with such a unique and stunning statement of style, innovation and pure green inspiration that we cannot resist. Such was the case when renowned New Zealand artisan, Kerry Scott wrote to us about his work with Kauri and Macrocarpa wood. Kerry harvests his huge wooden slabs sustainably from fallen trees--some have been downed for as long as 40,000 years! But once Kerry gets to work milling and shaping, their beauty and strength come back to life in incredible splendor.

Another stunning type of wood Kerry works with is the giant macrocarpa tree (Cupressus Macrocarpa). It originated in California and was brought to New Zealand where it grows to extraordinary sizes. The timber is ideal for luxury dining tables and executive boardroom furniture. It's rich knotty swirling grain coupled with its own natural preservative and insect repellant also make it ideal for uniquely exclusive outdoor furniture. The macrocarpa was originally brought from California and planted all over New Zealand for shelter belts. With the NZ sun and the rainfall it grew to enormous sizes, some up to 4 meters across the base. Until recently the wood was used for firewood but often farmers bulldozed the trees into piles and burned them!!!

Now macrocarpa is being used for many purposes, from high end furniture and boat building to garden sleepers and fenceposts. Kerry has planted a small plantation in the north of New Zealand. Under a forest management plan his marcocarpa trees will be harvested in about 40 years after they have grown to the sizes shown on this page.
